Gilat Ben-Dor is a contemporary artist based in Scottsdale, Arizona. She works in three primary media: silk painting, watercolor, and hightexture acrylic. She studied Fine Art at Brandeis University and L'Istituto Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy, as well as specialized art in Japan and Israel. Her works have been exhibited and collected internationally. She is also the author of three books about living and working with multiple passions. Ben-Dor’s art focuses on life's exuberance through bold color, palpable texture, and rich metallic embellishments. Influenced by lush Renaissance paintings and the opulence of golden Byzantine mosaics, her work seeks to bridge classic elements with contemporary themes.
I focus on life's exuberance through sultry and playful themes. My paintings on paper combine bold color, ambiguous passions, and often employ rich embellishments, such as metal leaf. Influenced by lush Renaissance paintings and the opulence of golden Byzantine mosaics, I seek to bridge classic elements with contemporary themes. Figures, music, and natural elements such as trees and pomegranates are recurring motifs in my work, and I often explore this subject matter across various media, including textured acrylic and large silk paintings. I was born with Synesthesia, a neural condition where numbers and letters are often assigned colors in the mind, and sounds can be envisioned as bursts of colors. My synesthesia has blessed me with a rich inner life, and one that transforms my art into an extension of my very thoughts.
